Though there are now many options available for preventing HIV and STIs such as syphilis and chlamydia, one longstanding method of protection remains underused: condoms.

PrEP - pre-exposure prophylaxis - is highly effective at preventing HIV, but it does not protect against other STIs. Doxy-PEP, an antibiotic prescribed if someone believes they have been exposed to syphilis or chlamydia, has helped to reduce the incidences of these infections, but prevention is still preferable to to treatment.

Condoms are an inexpensive and easy way - when used correctly - to protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections, so consider making condom usage part of your sexual health routine.

Allies for Health + Wellbeing always has free condoms available for anyone who needs them, including dental dams and female condoms as well as latex-free options for those with allergies. If you’re unsure about how to properly use a condom, talk to your healthcare provider. If you’re interested in getting tested for sexually transmitted infections, you can make an appointment at Allies by visiting AlliesPGH.org or calling 412-345-7456.
